A story in 150 words? In this collection of short stories written by four champions in the “Write Up! Flash Story Competition,” the authors explore life through unique lenses, blending humour, warmth, and poignant moments. What creative stories do you want to write?
This is the final round of the first Hong Kong Fish Ball Table Tennis Championship. The score is tied at 10:10 and the next score will decide the champion!
The player throws the fish ball into the air gently for a service: Should I do a long topspin or a short backspin?
But when the aroma of fish ball wafts into his nose — the game is over.
“What a foul! He ate the last fish ball of the competition!”

After school, I realised that I had forgotten my keys, so I called my mom and waited at “home.”
“Mom” saw me and gave me some washed fruits. “Help yourself and feel free to have snacks,” she told me. “Thank you,” I said.
A lady came to buy eggs but was a few dollars short. “Mom” told her no problem and she could pay later.
Then, an old lady came to get her shopping cart, and “Mom” helped move it out for her.
My mom came to pick me up, and as I walked out of the store, I told “Mom” I would see her tomorrow.

“Gua——Gua——” I don’t know how many days I’ve been locked up. I stuck out my long, slimy tongue, waiting for the opportunity to escape. “I want three of them!” the old lady shouted, and immediately the vendor opened a rusty cage filled with over 100 frogs piled on top of each other.
“Am I getting out? Am I getting out?” The cage suddenly opened, and I positioned myself with my legs ready to jump out. Surprisingly, my legs were caught and dragged onto the cutting board. “This frog is lively. The meat must be tender,” the vendor chuckled and skillfully picked up a knife. Then, the frog’s skin was gone.

As I watched her finish half a bowl of Twenty-Four Flavors Herbal Tea, I tasted the bitterness even more intense than if I had tried it myself. With her hoarse voice, she asked, “Why can’t Twenty-Four Flavors be sweet like Western medicine, even though it’s so bitter?” Taking the bowl from her hand, I drank the remaining tea in one gulp and said, “It’s sweet because love is the best seasoning.” She paused and burst into laughter. “Silly fool, my disease can be contagious.” The same goes for love. ■

To support the Biliteracy and Trilingualism Campaign by SCOLAR launched in December 2023, the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (HKFYG) has been hosting the “Write Up! Flash Story Competition.”
This initiative encourages youth to explore their creativity through reading and writing. Participants will create micro-stories—three to five sentences long—in both Chinese and English, reflecting various aspects of life in Hong Kong, such as food, clothing, and leisure activities. The competition aims to cultivate a love for reading and writing while promoting positive values and enhancing interest in bilingual learning.
